Hey there, welcome to Cluster Consulting.

We are a radically transparent organisation, taking a knowledge first approach to openly sharing every aspect of our work.

We believe there are three clusters in which every programme of work falls into:

  1. Understanding a problem
  2. Attempting to remedy a problem
  3. Ensuring people are aware a problem has been fixed

Let's run through a few examples to prove this out.

Example 1: SaaS(y) Sandra

Sandra is a product owner in a large Software as a Service company.

They realise there's a problem with users adopting a fancy new feature the team has spent several months working on. Sandra attempt to diagnose this problem using data insights and talking to real world users - Sandra is tackling the first cluster, understanding a problem.

After some rigorous investigation Sandra and their team think they've found the root cause, the new feature wasn't solving their users needs. The teams sets about figuring out how they can solve the needs of their users and decide to take a MVP, a Minimal Viable Product, approach so they can quickly test and learn - Sandra is tackling the second cluster, attempting to remedy the problem.

The team toils away, regularly shipping updates to their users and getting direct feedback too. They think they've solved the need for the user. Sandra realises that now is the time to start talking about these new enhancements so others current users, and future potential users are aware, Sandra helps kick off a marketing campaign - Sandra is tackling the third cluster, making people aware once a problem has been fixed.

Example 2: Financial Fred

Fred is Head of Technology for a bank. Everyone keeps telling Fred to focus on block chain and AI, so Fred conducts a landscape analysis to see where their focus should be. During this analysis, it becomes clear there are bigger opportunities to transform the banks operations through legacy modernisation so Fred assembles and empowers a small team to scope out these opportunities - Fred is tackling the first cluster, understanding the problem.

Following the recommendations from the small team, Fred assembles a multidisciplinary team to tackle a specific section of a legacy system. The team are empowered and deliver incremental improvements over the coming months to internal users which increases their efficiency 10x - Fred is tackling the second cluster, attempting to remedy the problem.

After some time, the multidisciplinary team is assigned a new focus area and moves on, however Fred isn't seeing the uptick in efficiency they expected. Fred investigates by talking to a select number of internal users and finds out they aren't aware of the changes. Fred implements a cross-company internal marketing campaign to raise awareness and starts to see efficiency increase as expected in their business case - Fred is tackling the third cluster, making people aware once a problem has been fixed.

Example 3: Government Gary

Gary works in a senior role in the Government and wants to make a real positive difference. Gary's Government departments workflow has been impacted by remote working and they are struggling to help citizens. Gary looks at the metrics of incoming citizen requests and quickly identifies most are related to a similar specific need - Gary is tackling the first cluster, understanding the problem.

Gary gains approval to solve this citizen user need in a better way. They collate a multidisciplinary team together, shipping updates daily and getting feedback from users quickly too. The team hits their stride and they think they've solve the citizens user need a couple of weeks later - Gary is tackling the second cluster, attempting to remedy the problem.

A few days go by and the team aren't seeing many requests coming through the new digital service. Gary is puzzled as they had validated the need and worked with citizens directly throughout the development process. Gary investigates further and finds out that no-one has informed the relevant citizens this new digital service existed, so the Government team put together coherent messaging through a variety of channels and Gary see's an uptick in usage which increases citizen satisfaction - Gary is tackling the third cluster, making people aware once a problem has been solved.
